This paper describes the evolution of the expression a ver p from the 12th to the 16th century. Firstly, we study, from a morphosyntactic and semantic perspective, the initial steps of the grammaticalisation of the structure, which is not used independently -not introduced by a verb-until the middle of the 16th century. The study enables us to reject the commonly accepted hypothesis that the marker a ver in contemporary Spanish derives from vamos a ver. It is also shown that the structure a ver si p functions similarly to a ver p, although the independent use is attested earlier, at the beginning of the 15th century. Finally, the use of a ver (p) (expression and marker) is compared with that of the markers à voir and voyons voir in contemporary French, and with that of the marker avoi in medieval French, all of them formed with the verb voir.
