Abstract
- Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, nonspecific inflammatory disease limited to the colorectal mucosa and submucosa, which recurs repeatedly and is difficult to cure. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have shown that Chinese herbal monomers and compound recipes are capable of regulating Toll-like receptor 4 / nuclear transcription factor-κB (TLR4/NF-κB), nucleotide-binding oligomerisation structural domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), Janus kinase/transcription activating factor 3 (JAK/STAT3), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/ Akt), neurogenic site gap homologue (Notch), adenylate-activated protein kinase / mammalian target of rapamycin (AMPK/m-TOR), signaling pathways to inhibit inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, as well as repairing intestinal barrier to reduce UC symptoms and improve intestinal function. The paper systematically summarized the content of the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the treatment of UC based on the signaling pathway, with a view to providing a new theoretical basis for the treatment of UC with TCM.
