Abstract

The article describes challenges to the infrastructure of the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush. It focuses on the ramifications of the legal case being brought against Scooter Libby, right-hand man to Vice-President Dick Cheney, by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. The mood at the White House and the President's reactions are discussed, along with the political power and influence of Cheney and his policies. The present political predicament of the administration is described, including its plans for the future and its reactions to recent difficulties arising from opposition to and skepticism about the war in Iraq and from criticism about the failed nomination of Harriet Miers as a Supreme Court Justice.
