Abstract

The article reports on new hardware from the computer industry that uses too much electricity and generates a great deal of heat, especially the servers that run business programs and Web sites. These powerful machines are resulting in huge utility bills. The cost and difficulty of introducing a greater supply of electricity and cooling is considered. Organizations must sometimes choose between building new facilities and leaving space unoccupied to avoid overloading their air-conditioning systems. It is possible for servers to overheat, causing damage to computers and disrupting operations in general.
