Abstract
- The article focuses on Howard Dully, whose experience undergoing a lobotomy at age 12 is depicted in "My Lobotomy," a radio documentary broadcast on the National Public Radio program "All Things Considered." Dr. Walter J. Freeman, one of the first Americans to perform a transorbital lobotomy, devised the prefrontal, or so-called ice pick, lobotomy. Because the procedures was used indiscriminately, Freeman frequently had poor and even tragic results. Dully was lobotomized because he did not get along with his stepmother.
