Abstract

The article ranks universities in Canada and focuses on the University of Waterloo which retained its number one position on the Comprehensive Ranking list. Waterloo is internationally recognized for the unparalleled success of its more than 100 undergraduate and graduate co-op programs, which place more than 11,000 students in paying jobs with roughly 3,500 employers annually. President David Johnston notes that Waterloo accounts for 22 per cent of all the technology-transfer companies spawned by research at Canadian universities, and in its brief history has created more than 250 companies. One of the most dramatic success stories belongs to Mike Lazaridis, the university's chancellor who once studied engineering at Waterloo, and, most notably, invented the BlackBerry and founded Research in Motion Ltd. Waterloo was good to Lazaridis, and he's shown his gratitude, donating $50 million to his alma mater's Institute for Quantum Computing. Other universities included on the list are Victoria, Guelph, Simon Fraser, and Memorial.
