Abstract

The article evaluates the GarageBand Anywhere 5.0.1, an installation application, from Apple Computer Inc. Apple's GarageBand is a killer application, but it's also a huge one--including all of its support files (loops, instruments, and so on), it takes up nearly 2.5 GB of hard-drive space. Because of these space requirements, one might think about installing GarageBand on a larger, non startup drive. The problem is that the iLife installer will not let one put GarageBand anywhere but on the startup volume. And although one can copy the application itself to another drive, it is the smallest component of the package (around 50MB)--the real space hogs are the support files, which must reside in the /Library directory. Alternatively, the Move GarageBand option can copy the existing application and support files to a new volume, moving the original files to a backup directory. In either case, the utility creates Unix links on the startup disk so that OS X treats GarageBand as if it were located on the startup disk.
