Abstract

The article reports that the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) has been awarded a grant to help researchers advance their understanding of how human embryonic stem cells can be differentiated into ocular cells to treat eye disease. The grant is part of a contentious legal and ethical battle over the use of embryonic stem cells. The UCSB has planned to use its money to support a variety of interdisciplinary studies of the stem cells' basic biology.
