Abstract

The aim of this paper is to introduce the concept of sustainable urban wastewater management in the Asian context. Sewerage systems are key facilities to support public health and sound development in urban areas. They exist in most of the rapidly developing cities of Asia; however, a range of practical, financial. political, and environmental factors mean that provision is often inadequate to meet current and projected demand. To meet clean water goals and reduce the environmental impacts of urbanization, sewerage systems should be incorporated property into watershed management plans. The paper ends by examining some of the range of new and established technologies and methods that can help Asian cities and periurban areas to minimize the burden and maximize the potential benefits of urban wastewater.
