Abstract

This article discusses how George Preston and Kurt Thometz opened up cultural institutions in their own homes in Harlem. Preston turned three floors of his brownstone into the Museum of Art and Origins. Thometz converted a room of his brownstone into Jumel Terrace Books. The opening night of these two institutions generated interest among the public. Several prominent people were in attendance, including Fran Lebowitz, Robert Farris Thompson, and Playthell Benjamin. Both institutions reside in Jumel Terrace, a neighborhood in Harlem. A description of the collections in each institution is presented.
