Abstract

The article features General Charles de Gaulle, the president of the Fifth Republic of France and the man responsible to save the country. His passionate devotion to the cause of France, bordering on obsession, is too well known to be debated. De Gaulle's immense authority enabled him to take some measures that would have wrecked any previous government. What seems far more important to the Frenchman in the street is that he is being squeezed between high prices and low wages. Not only has the average French worker lost about one tenth of his purchasing power since De Gaulle came in, but some of the reform decrees seem needlessly severe and irritating.
