Abstract

The article reports on the lawsuit filed by Zhang Chunliang, an expert on Internet addiction, against online gaming industry after the suicide incident which occurred New Year's Eve of 2004 in China identifying addiction on Internet games as the main cause. The victim who was identified as Xiaoyi, online alias of the 13-year-old student in a junior middle school in Tianjin, China, has committed suicide after 36 hours of playing online games. As stated in the article, Xiaoyi has finished an 80, 000-character story online before jumping to his death from a 24-storey building. According to the author, Zhang is determined to pursue the lawsuit in order to prevent similar tragedies occurring and to give justice to Xiaoyi. In addition, an anti-addiction program has been released by the General Administration of Press and Publication in response to the issue of addiction.
