Abstract

The comic stage of Aristophanes sometimes represents situations in which juridical references become present, especially within passages that can illustrate modem classicists on the use of Athenian law in a live context of dramatic interaction. What is more, and through an opposite perspective, explicit or implicit allusions to Attic law can allow us, in turn, to explain certain scenes in the Aristophanic corpus which have been obscurely analyzed. The case of Acharnians is significant from this two-sided panorama. On the one hand, the play constitutes a unique evidence for the Judicial praxis of [This symbol cannot be presented in ASCII format] during the Fifth Century B.C. On the other hand, mentions to this procedure are repeatedly incorporated throughout the play and are related —from an etymological standpoint— with the theatrical appearance of the blackmailer as a character ([This symbol cannot be presented in ASCII format]). This strange lexical and semantical insistence makes us infer that all along the verses a real word-play is being dealt with, which can take us to enlighten ([This symbol cannot be presented in ASCII format]) a discussion still in force in the philological comments on this comedy: the possibility that its protagonist, Dicaeopolis, may be nothing more than a ‘mask’ representing Aristophanes himself.
