Abstract

Abstract: A femtosecond (fs) electron bunching was observed in a photoinjector with a magnetic compressor by rotating the bunch in longitudinal phase space. The bunch length was obtained by measuring Cherenkov radiation of the electron beam with a femtosecond streak camera technique. A single electron bunch with rms bunch length of 98fs was observed for a 32MeV electron beam at a charge of 0.17nC. The relative energy spread and the normalized transverse emittance of the electron beam were 0.2% and 3.8mm-mrad, respectively. The effect of space charge on the bunch compression was investigated experimentally for charges from 0.17 to 1.25nC. The dependences of the relative energy spread and the normalized beam transverse emittance on the bunch charge were measured. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
