Abstract

The article examines the Italian cultural geography, or the history of a prolific absence. There is nothing in the Italian geographical tradition that matches, for instance, the body of reflection that emerged in British geography in the nineteen eighties and nineteen nineties, following the pioneering work of scholars such as Denis Cosgrove, Stephen Daniels and Peter Jackson. There are no Chairs in Cultural Geography, and few university courses of that name. The prolific absence of a true cultural geography in Italy reflects many of the characteristics of the discipline as a whole: a discipline which, to an external observer, might appear largely dis-articulated, isolated from international debates, and seemingly lacking internal dialogue.
