Abstract

The article presents information related to power sanders. There's only one reason to buy a power sander. It's a whole lot faster than doing the job by hand. Although sanders are designed to make wood smooth, they actually do it by making wood uniformly rough: scratching the surface with abrasive grit in a series of finer and finer steps. Belt sanders are to hand sanding what circular saws are to hand sawing--they take a linear, reciprocating motion and make it circular and continuous. Standard orbital sanders have a square sanding pad that's connected to the motor by an eccentric shaft. Random-orbit sanders install a round pad and allow the disc to spin freely as well as orbit.
