Abstract

The article offers a look at the problems associated with the efforts of small newspapers to publish their online versions. The costs associated with electronic publishing hinder the efforts of small newspapers to take advantage of the popularity of the Internet. There are Web sites that publish papers online for free. Such Web sites do not charge the publishers but charge the users a fee for access. These sites ask a publisher to send a microfilm containing the papers to be published online. Since most small newspapers do not have microfilm, entrepreneur Paul Jeffko thought of digitizing as a method of online publishing. In May 2005, SmallTownPapers was launched by Jeffko providing an area for small newspapers to be published online by digitizing original pages.
