This article looks at the news that the U.S. government has been monitoring and eavesdropping on Americans without appropriate warrants. The National Security Agency and the FBI have been running counterterrorism investigations on animal rights, environmental, antiwar, and peace activist groups without warrants. President George W. Bush has authorized the warrantless searches on at least thirty occasions and plans to continue. He believes that Americans want him to err on the side of security.
