Abstract

The article focuses on Democratic leaders, who are disheartened by the U.S. President George W. Bush administration's success with the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. Democrats say that Bush is putting an enduring conservative ideological imprint on the nation's judiciary. They believe that the lesson of the Alito hearings is that this White House can put on the bench almost any qualified candidate, even one considered by Democrats to be ideologically out of step with the country. Democrats were dismayed that a nominee with such conservative views appeared to stir little opposition.
