Abstract

The article discusses the American artists' reasons for making their self-portrait paintings. Cecilia Beaux painted her self-portrait to fulfill a membership requirement for the National Academy of Design while Emmanuel Leutze's work was done to advertise the artist as a man of reserve and dignity. On the other hand Henry Inman demonstrated how he worked while William Merritt Chase painted to create a means to exhibit style. John La Farge is an expert on painting in his own likeness.
