Abstract
- This article reports on the efforts by landlords in New York City to evict tenants from apartments for which they pay rents far below the market rate in 2006. Tenants in New York are protected against evictions in many cases, but not if the landlord has applied for and received permission to demolish the building. Tenants contend that demolition means the physical knocking down of the building. Landlord and city real estate officials define demolition as a substantial renovation of the building in question, an interpretation of the term they contend confers the right to evict.
