Abstract

The article focuses on the existence of class distinction in higher education in the U.S. The nation's wealthiest and most selective colleges are failing to enroll large numbers of poor students. Never before have American colleges been asked to play a more crucial part in educating a generation of students for a global economy. The University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology all unveiled pricey new financial-aid policies and in doing so, acknowledged that they needed to work harder to enroll more poor students.
