Abstract

Using the argument that the educational systems in Latin American were inefficient, international politic and financial organizations promoted reforms to modernize the educational system in the region, using a free market logic. Chile was used as a laboratory for those reforms, which afterwards were applied to other Latin American countries. This paper analyses the argument that educational quality would be improved through competitiveness as a strategy to privatize the educational system by transferring its financing form public to private sources to the detrimental of the national system of education. Finally, this paper examines the modernization process and failure of the Mexican system of education organized from a free market model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
