The author reflects on the idea of author Joel Robbins on referencing ideologies of communication for understanding the variation in ritual performances. He thinks that ideologies about ritual and language vary significantly both historically and locally and in very complex ways. Moreover, he supports Robbins' suggestion that their relationship warrants further investigation and that the key to success in this endeavor is attention to ethnographic and historical detail.
