Abstract

Francophone minority interest groups are addressing the issue of immigration more and more, especially as immigrants' tendency to integrate into Anglophone communities (rather than Francophone ones) is increasing the demographic gap between the two official language communities in Canada. In this paper, we examine the discourse regarding immigration that these interest groups put forward on their websites. We show, through enunciation analysis and an examination of the terms used to designate immigrants on the one hand and welcoming communities on the other, that these organizations perceive immigrants as perpetually 'other', or foreign to their community and its perceived needs. Thus, despite an explicitly stated will to be open, these groups show a certain difficulty in adopting a truly inclusive discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
