Abstract

The article informs about a course study on exorcism at the Pontifical Academy Regina Apostolorum in Italy. The Roman Catholic Church takes the issue of exorcism seriously. The academy is offering semester-long course on exorcism for a third time in the summer of 2006. The academy is one of about 20 pontifical higher-education institutions in Rome, which teach the approved doctrine of the Vatican City. The class had about 120 students in the winter semester of 2005, mostly working priests, but also laypeople working with the church. Lessons were broadcast by video links to other students in Milan and Bologna. Bishop Andrea Gemma, who delivered the opening lecture, says he performs at least four exorcisms a week. The course deals with legal, medical, and pastoral aspects of demonic possession, a history of Satanism or devil-worship, and biblical teachings on the devil. The course began two years ago in response to a growing demand among Italy's predominantly Catholic public for exorcisms. Students study a manual published by the Vatican with instructions on dealing with demonic possession, biblical passages on demons, and prayers. In addition, each lecturer assigns articles and book chapters.
