Abstract

The definition of grey literature is given and its new role in information society is outlined. The Scientific and Technical Information Centre of Russia (the Russian acronym - VNTIC) was created 35 years ago by the government decision to centralise the collection and bibliographic control of all Soviet (now - Russian) grey literature. VNTIC is responsible for the maintenance of the complete repository for scientific R&D reports and dissertations (candidate and doctoral). VNTIC carries out the dual function of both archiving and disseminating grey literature. A general outline of VNTIC activities is given and a brief description of VNTIC information products and services is presented. The sphere of grey literature is considered to be a very promising and fruitful direction of international cooperation and information exchange. Some ways to overcome cooperation barriers are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
