Abstract

Research with the Dunn and Dunn model of learning style strongly supports the hypotheses that (a) reading achievement improves significantly when reading programs match individual learning styles; (b) poor readers tend to be tactile-kinesthetic learners with a biased arousal of the right hemisphere of the brain; and (c) the learning styles of many poor readers are not accommodated. The author enumerates the methodological errors in past research investigating the merit of teaching students through their strongest modality and recommends procedures for teaching poor readers through their learning style preferences and strengths.
