Abstract

The article reports on the strategic moves of Intel with the launching of the dual-core Xeon Processor 5100 series server chip and selling off its line of communication chips as of July 2006. It was learned that the new Xeon chip, code-named Woodcrest, posted a strong start when Intel announced that customers could take delivery of Woodcrest-enabled servers from Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM by the third quarter. According to Jed Scaramella, analyst with IDC, electricity costs and room temperature in datacenters soar as blade and rack servers become denser and processor get faster. Such problem can be addressed by Woodcrest.
