Abstract

The article discusses the threat of retroviruses on blood safety. According to the article, series of research findings showed that transmission of retroviruses from nonhuman primates (NHP) to humans is a regular and ongoing phenomenon. It describes the transmission of simian spumaviruses (SFV) from monkeys, apes and prosimians to humans. It notes that SFV-infected primate workers have donated blood in the United States.
