Abstract

The article reports that customers are being notified by San Francisco, California-based Wells Fargo & Co. about the theft of a computer which is containing data on mortgage customers and prospective clients. This is the fourth incident in a series of embarrassing and nearly identical data breaches that have taken place in the past 30 months. On May 5, 2006, a statement was posted by the bank on its Web site saying that the computer was reported missing while being transported between Wells Fargo facilities by an undisclosed global express shipping company. The stolen computer, which belonged to the company's mortgage group, contained various types of customer data, such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers and mortgage loan account numbers. According to a company spokesman, so far, there's no indication that the information kept on the computer has been misused.
