Abstract

A definition of the term "serotonin" is presented. It is categorized as a hormone and has been found to be the most diverse physiological substance in the body. Its functions as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system include the regulation of functions, such as sleep, mood and appetite. It also influences production of other hormones and has a role in the immune system.
