Abstract

The article focuses on the changing definitions of the term technology. It contends that technology was traditionally defined as the science of the practical arts. It asserts that the founding of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1861 brought technology into more common usage in the U.S. It explains that the change from technology as the study of the practical arts, to technology as the artifacts and processes of industrial civilization was brought by the German discourse of Technik.
