Abstract

This article reports on a day care center in New Jersey that was closed after the discovery of unacceptably high mercury levels. A third of the 60 children tested have shown abnormally high levels of mercury in their systems and will require long-term monitoring. Officials are questioning how a building that was once a mercury thermometer factory could have been allowed to be used as a day care center. Mercury vapor levels in the building were 27 times the regulatory limit.
