Abstract

The article offers information on the evolution of American circus as a unique art form. Circus was characterized with parade including an ostentatious chariot, hundreds of horses, military bands, chimes of cathedral organs, wild animals, Shetland ponies and shimmering banners. However, the gentry refused to accept it as an art form and considered it worthless and vulgar.
