Abstract

The article presents a segment of nineteenth century U.S. history, the 1909 establishment of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School at a military base in Pennsylvania through the efforts of Lieutenant Richard Henry Pratt. He held the conviction that Indians could be assimilated into the white population if they were educated and treated with sympathy and kindness.
