Abstract

The article discusses the two sixth century Chinese figures Tao-ch'o and Ching-ying Hui-yüan. They contributed to the emergence and growth of Pure Land thought and practice in China. The interest in mo-fa ideology was probably at its peak and the argument made by Tao-ch'o regarding the Pure Land path as the most appropriate path to the mo-fa ideology is examined. Hui-yüan's understanding of the mo-fa doctrine and related attitudes is described.
