Abstract

The article highlights the Keller Hotel, built in 1898 to accommodate sailors in New York City before becoming a one-room-occupancy hotel, then a welfare hotel, then eventually shutting down and remaining vacant for several years. It is reported that the building may be designated as a landmark through the efforts of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, pending a November 14, 2006 vote. Controversy surrounding the building and the history of its neighborhood are highlighted.
