Abstract

The article offers information on Japan's arrival into the high-energy industrial sector by building a hard x-ray free-electron laser (XFELs). The XFELs beams have higher illumination and shorter pulses than the synchrotron x-rays. The wavelengths are capable of revealing the structure of proteins that have not been detected through other techniques. According to Tsumoru Shintake, head of the accelerator development for XFEL, the XFEL project will have similar targets but will be designed in different ways to reach excellence.
