Abstract

The article presents a comparative review of the British government's white paper "Higher Standards: Better Schools for All, the Education and Inspections Bill and the National Union of Teachers' (NUT) education statement "Bringing Down the Barriers." The intention for the publication is to stimulate debates in England and Wales about the future direction of the education service. It enabled NUT to make positive responses to the Prime Minister's pessimistic assessment of education.
