Abstract

The article recounts the Battle for New York City which occurred during the summer of 1776 as highlighted in a documentary film for PBS. A brigade of Marylanders under the command of William Alexander covered the retreat of the survivors. About 256 Marylanders had been killed out of 400 when the battle began. In the 1950s, the remains of the dead that were buried on a Dutchman's farms were found under an automobile-body shop. Congress directed the Army to make the site a national cemetery. It is said that the fighting on Long Island resulted in 500 deaths and 1,000 prisoners.
