Abstract

The article reports that Brenda Jo Brueggemann resigned from her post as the acting chair of the Board of Trustees of Gallaudet University (Washington, D.C.) in November 2006, a day after U.S. Senator John McCain also stepped down from the board. Both indicated they were disappointed by the board's decision to rescind the appointment of a new president, Jane K. Fernandes, in the face of determined protests by students, professors, and alumni. A letter written by McCain to the departing president I. King Jordan is highlighted, and it is explained that the two other members of Congress who serve on the board have no plans to resign. The overall impact of the controversy over Fernandes' appointment as it relates to the board is explored, and a response from Brueggemann is provided.
