Abstract
- This article discusses the paradoxical status of the Jews in regard to literary primitivism as well as examines the writings of and the myths surrounding Russian and Yiddish writer, Shloyme-Zanvl Rappoport. Rappoport was the author of the play "The Dybbuk", which was believed to be the foundation of the modern Hebrew and Yiddish theatrical repertoires. The article attempts to shift the geographic focus from art of Western Europe to the Russian empire, where both the Jews and modernism developed along distinct paths.
