Abstract

The author presupposes that many doctoral candidates share the experience of working with a dissertation adviser who is disorganized, overcommitted, and opinionated. According to the author, this has the potential to impact her job search because of the adviser's failure to write recommendation letters in a timely manner and because of her anxiety over meeting with the adviser in order to continue publishing papers from her dissertation. She speculates about the potential career implications of deciding not to publish the remaining papers possible out her dissertation. She determines that, ultimately, she has the power to be in control of her own reactions and should not respond to her adviser in a way that creates limitations.
