Abstract

The article reports on the reinstatement of the roadless rule by a U.S. federal district Judge Elizabeth Laporte, which is a ban on road construction, logging, mining and other development on acres of wild national forestland. The ban, which was put in place after a three-year process that included more than 600 public hearings and which has elicited comments, was abolished by the Bush Administration in 2005. Judge Laporte concluded that the Bush Administration violated the National Environmental Policy and Endangered Species Act by not conducting an environmental analysis when it removed the roadless protections.
