Abstract

The article discusses the widening U.S. foreign trade deficit even as the U.S. dollar's value continues to decline. A weaker dollar should help shrink the trade imbalance, which instead is on the way toward surpassing the 2006 deficit. Treasury secretary Henry M. Paulson, Jr. said a strong dollar was in the U.S.'s better interests. Martin N. Baily, former chief economic advisor to President Bill Clinton, remains optimistic that exports are growing faster than imports.
