Abstract

The article reports on a controversy over an unauthorized sign on a student center at the City College of New York. Two small, registered student groups use the center, identified by the sign as the "Guillermo Morales/Assata Shakur Community and Student Center." The "Daily News" tabloid protested the sign, calling its namesakes terrorists. Morales was arrested on bomb-making charges in 1978 and Shakur, born Joanne Chesimard, was convicted of killing a New Jersey State trooper in 1973. Supporters consider the two to be heroes in the struggle for the rights of the poor and racial minorities, but university officials called the sign inappropriate and removed it immediately.
