Abstract
- The article reports on an honors course titled "Modern Political Satire," offered at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The professor, Rachael Paine Caufield, warns students that they should be prepared to be exposed to materials that may offend them. Caufield briefly references historical satirists, but focuses on modern events, stating that satire can be effective only if its consumers have an understanding of the social and political context it attacks. Readings include "Thank You for Smoking," by Christopher Buckley, and Joseph Heller's "Catch-22." Assignments include a group presentation, several writing projects, and a creative satire project.
