Abstract

The article reports that the Indian government delayed approving the projects of dozens of Fulbright scholars for months and has rejected some projects without explanation, a practice that observers believe is an attempt to force the scholars to change their research topics. The research subjects that were rejected without explanation by the Indian government include studies of language ideologies in the schools of Mumbai, India's financial capital, to which millions of Indians from other states migrate, democratization in Kerala, and Muslim women's perceptions of the role of women in society.
