Abstract
- The article reports that accrediting institutions have successfully pushed back a proposal by the United States Education Department that called for the groups to set minimum standards of "student achievement" at the colleges they oversee. Accrediting groups have complained that the department has tried to impose broad requirements on them when federal recognition of the groups comes up for renewal. The changes came after the federal Commission on the Future of Higher Education suggested the current accreditation system be dismantled.
